JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Communications is an integral member of the senior management team and will be responsible for the development of the organization’s communication strategy. The Director must be passionate about the mission of elevating the profile of Centre County as a Tourism Destination of Choice.
This position will manage Media Relations, develop a Corporate Communications plan, and manage Social Media and Editorial Content. The Director will ensure the delivery of effective and timely media coverage (b-to-c and b-to-b), expand our engagement with media, consumers and stakeholders, create timely content about every dimension of the Centre County visitor experience and develop a viable online pressroom. The Director will also work with Penn State University’s Communications Program and other appropriate channels to capitalize on the potential of interns and part-time works to supplement the department’s efforts. The Director will also play the lead role in editing/proof reading the majority of communications emanating from the organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the Executive Director to achieve the CPCVB’s goals. Contribute substantially to the creation and implementation of the yearly marketing plan.
Create, execute and measure strategic and effective communications and social media programs for the CPCVB. This includes the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations and social media activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the CPCVB and its leadership.
Actively engage, cultivate and manage press relationships among North American and Canadian media to ensure coverage surrounding the CPCVB and its sales and marketing programs and priorities, its tourism product, special events, public announcements, and other projects. Exercise sound judgement to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed.
Build collaborative relationships with stakeholder organizations, colleagues and corporations and serve as an ambassador for the CPCVB.
Advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and support for the CPCVB through participation in local and industry organizations as well as presenting at conferences, speaking engagements and other activities.
Facilitate a minimum of three press trips per year hosting qualified travel writers, bloggers etc.
Manage any CPCVB external public relations contracts.
Implement projects as assigned by the Executive Director.
Must be available for overnight travel, night and weekend availability as deemed necessary. This position and the Executive Directors are always “on call.”

Minimum of 5 + years experience and demonstrated leadership skills in a fast-paced, multi-responsibility environment. Degree in journalism, communications, or related field is desired unless offset by very extensive experience in the field.
Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements.
Ability to work as a “Team Player,” and demonstrated success in doing so is critical.
Superior writing and editing skills a must.
Strong crisis management skills and experience are necessary.
Must have some knowledge of Centre County, PA and its tourism attractions and assets.
Experience complemented by time spent as a journalist and/or editor is useful.
Experience in the non-profit world with a diverse set of constituents is a plus.
Experience working for or representing in a pr capacity; a tourism attraction, restaurant, or hotel group a plus.
Proficient in Word, Excel, Power Point, databases, and web searches.
Comfortable with and conversant about social media trends and how they are affecting consumer travel trends.
Ability to design effective programs for interns and other supplemental resources that is mutually beneficial and adds great value to the organization’s mission.
Must be free to travel as needed to carry out CPCVB goals.
Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and transport CPCVB equipment and materials for use in programs.
Must have a valid Driver’s License.
