This is a Virginia Beach based sales position with a Multi-cultural, Corporate and Midwest market focus. Under occasional supervision, manager plans and executes sales strategy on prospects and maximizes chances of successfully closing the “sale”, especially as it relates to the booking of the meeting hotels and the Virginia Beach Convention Center facilities, especially in the off-season time frames; utilizes ability to multi-task by researching and developing marketing strategies to include:
1. Prospecting and account relationship development
2. Sales solicitation activities best practices
3. Planning and execution of Sales missions
4. Lead generation and management
5. Site inspection generation and management (including FAMS)
6. Industry event management and representation
Resulting in Leads/Tentatives and ultimately bookings for the City of Virginia Beach in a manner that makes optimum use of time, money, and material resources.
It is preferred that the candidate have State, Regional, and/or National experience in soliciting new business in the meetings and convention market, responding to and/or generating leads; fluent knowledge of hospitality meeting and convention industry and its terminology; minimum of four to six years of state, regional, or national hospitality sales experience successfully selling to the multi-cultural meetings market preferably.
Candidate must also have experience with coordinating citywide opportunities, rate negotiations, promotional specials, rebates, and other negotiating tools to develop business proposal and presentations.
Candidate should also have experience with the formal bid process and be able to make presentations to Meeting Planners, Board of Directors, and/or Government agencies. Candidate will also be required to identify target account list and develop tailored marketing plan in accordance with VBCVB sales goals and booking guidelines.
Perform convention and trade show solicitation activities in assigned market territories with the ability to close and book business in the national arena as well as regionally; travels; has contact with and serves as a liaison with city's hospitality industry as a partner and as a leader; does related work as required. Candidate possess outstanding communication skills, high energy, and strong customer relationship skills and is a team player; accurately prepares monthly reports and other documents as needed in a timely and efficient manner.
Primary focus to be on the multi-cultural accounts nationally (non-sports) & mid-west based association accounts; experience successfully selling to the national association/meetings market; knowledge, skills and abilities listed above center around direct sales efforts in CVBs, convention centers, hotels and other hospitality-related venues. Maximizes relationships and return on investment; body of experience shows successful conversion of direct sales efforts especially in the preferred market areas.
Candidate offers a robust portfolio of strong customer relationships established in the preferred market areas in the national arena. Works effectively in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, graphics, PowerPoint) and has the ability to learn/embrace new ways of selling by embracing new technologies and a sales software management system (SimpleView specifically is the preference) with ease. Ability to accurately maintain and prepare records in a timely fashion. An excellent oral and written communicator with the ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations and established policies: a “solution manager” and team player.
Is able to do the following: lift/move boxes/objects in a range of 5-35 pounds; stand for extended periods of time as needed with regards to direct sales efforts; work and travel outside of the normal Monday through Friday 8am-5pm time frame as needed; work as part of a team and participate with the team as needed for special projects and/or goals as directed.

VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
MINIMUMS: Any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to eight (8) years in fields related to marketing or business administration utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities as associated with such positions as hotel sales representative or director of sales. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be available to work and travel outside of normal business hours, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and hours in excess of normally scheduled hours, when required to meet operational needs. Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the Citys operational status. Must complete training and obtain certification in Defensive Driving; First Aid/CPR/AED; and Trained Crowd Manager by the end of the probationary period. Certifications must be maintained for the duration of employment in this classification.
