The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of Visit St. Mary’s MD, Inc. (VSM) the Destination Marketing Organization for St. Mary’s County. The Executive Director is responsible for the growth of tourism and weddings, sports and other group business. The Executive Director oversees execution of the Tourism Master Plan along with marketing and sales strategies and provides strategic leadership and oversight of the organization. This highly visible position interfaces with key community, government, hospitality, media and tourism leaders at the local, regional, and state level and demonstrates VSM’s positive impact on St. Mary’s County. The Executive Director works at the pleasure of the VSM Board of Directors and works closely with St. Mary’s County Economic Development team. The primary responsibilities of the VSMMD Executive Director are: - Overseeing of the day-to-day operations and administration of VSMMD and its programs and policies.
- Organizing, coordinating, and implementing the day-to-day activities involved in the promotion of St. Mary’s County and its tourism industry.
- Works collaboratively to drive the Tourism Hospitality Master Plan initiatives.
- Developing, gaining approval and implementing a sales and marketing plan.
- Creating programs to successfully solicit and secure sporting events.
- Developing and implementing programs to promote St. Mary’s County to outside visitors, sports and meeting attendees.
- Representing VSMMD in the support and development of local festivals, events, attractions, facilities, and community organizations.
- Representing VSMMD at key industry functions and events.
- Attending meetings of the County Commission.
- Developing, implementing and monitoring the annual VSMMD budget.
- Developing, coordinating and implementing financial strategies and policies that maintain the fiscal integrity of VSMMD.
- Overseeing the development, implementation and documentation of day-to-day financial transactions, payroll, investments, annual reports, financial statements and statutory requirements.
- Keeping the Board of Directors advised of financial matters with monthly financial statements.
- Keeping the Board of Directors informed of public relations matters.
- Assuring protection of assets through internal audits, inventory controls, and insurance coverage.
- Formulating budgets and practicing fiscal responsibility while carrying out VSMMD programs.
- Maintaining accurate records and monitoring the progress of VSM’s programs and projects.
- Developing a method for reporting progress on THMP implementation
- Reporting on agreed upon metrics and KPI’s with accountability for achieving goals
- Supervising all staff and their assigned duties.
- Managing human resources related to VSM staff and organization including performance reviews, as well as helping employees develop their personal and organizational skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Developing individual, team and accountability goals for staff.
- Recruiting, hiring, and terminating of employees when necessary.
- Approving all requests for staff vacations and leaves of absence.
- Assisting in the recruitment and motivation of volunteers.
- Serving on appropriate community committees and boards.
- Managing consistent relationships with the Board of Directors and keeping them informed.
- Managing external communication in order to obtain maximum publicity of programs and accomplishments.
- Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with St Mary’s County Commissioners and county officials.
- Interfacing with a broad group of stakeholders to continue the communication effort initiated with the THMP process.
- Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the VSMMD Board of Directors.
