General:

The Vice President of Sales (VP) is a key leadership position that will represent the San Diego Tourism Authority within the local San Diego community, with business events clients all over the country and at industry events. They will, along with the Chief Sales Officer (CSO), direct, motivate and lead a team of sellers and coordinators that work both locally and in remote locations; ensure the SDTA meets or exceeds annual hotel meetings room night goals; participate in developing and implement the strategic direction for the team regarding sales activities (prospecting, customer entertaining & events, trade shows and active membership in appropriate industry associations); assist in building and managing sections of the division’s annual division budget.

Responsibilities:

• With the CSO and divisional colleagues, Dir of Events and Sr. Dir of Site & Client Experience, work to build a strong culture and meet the division’s business needs.
• Lead & motivate the sales team to achieve the SDTA’s desired results, with primary responsibility being the sellers focused on Hotel Sales.
• Coach each team member to constant growth & improvement.
• Provide coaching and counseling to non-performers to achieve the desired performance.
• Conduct one-on-one meetings on a quarterly basis and annual performance review for each seller.
• Act as the first elevated leadership contact at SDTA for hotel stakeholders with questions relating to meeting/group needs.
• Oversee lead generation strategies and efforts.
• Coordinate and participate in monthly sales meeting with CSO.
• Work with CSO & Dir. of Events in developing ideas for successful client events.
• Work with sellers to identify and invite clients to attend SDTA client events.
• Maintain active membership in industry association for the purpose of interfacing with potential customers.
• Attend sales events and industry association meetings.
• Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders from hotel partners, San Diego Convention Center Corporation and key venues and attractions.
• Establish monthly and annual goals to be approved by the CSO and CEO and then monitor performance to those goals.
• Participate in client entertainment (breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions) in market and when travelling.
• Represent the SDTA at industry shows and sales missions along with sellers, CSO and President & CEO.
• Assist in the development of key components of the Division budget ensure compliance within spending and work with sellers to create and manage their own annual budgets for travel and entertainment, events and memberships.
• Approve payroll, PTO requests and other HR and administrative processes for direct reports.

    Annualized base salary range is $186k to $ 215k DOE.

Requirements: 

• Minimum 10 years experience leading a seasoned sales team in the hospitality industry
• Previous hotel sales leadership and DMO leadership experience is strongly preferred
• Prior experience working with a convention center and multiple hotel brands
• Experience leading, mentoring and guiding a sales team to success
• Experience managing remote sellers in different time zones is preferred
• Must have strong communication skills - written, oral and presentation along with strong interpersonal skills.
• Experience with change management
• Successful history of improving processes and efficiencies resulting in greater productivity
• Strong analytical skills to be able to determine best suited business opportunities for hotel community.
• Ability to create and present engaging presentations for customers, partners, TMD and Board of Directors.
• Conceptualize, develop and implement sales programs designed to increase sales productivity
• Willing and able to work evenings, weekends and holidays based on client and office demands
• Skilled in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Simpleview and VenueOps is preferred.
• Required travel should not be more than 20% on an annual basis.
